normal sleep is necessary if you want to have your brain awake

When

do not sleep enough, part of the neurons in our cerebral cortex take a break in the form of a short "nap" while remaining awake. These blackouts neural can be responsible "for the lapses of attention , the cognitive performance, the forgetfulness , impaired the trial or irritability that appear after many hours of staying awake, even if we do not feel dream, "says Giulio Tononi, investigadorde the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA) and coauthor of the study. The most curious, as Tononi, is that the sleep-deprived brain neurons groups are disconnected areas of the cerebral cortex while the rest remain awake.

In reaching this conclusion, Tononi and his colleagues forced a group of rats to stay awake for several hours. then recording the electrical activity of cerebral cortex, found that while the electroencefalograbamas indicated that they were awake, had intervals in some parts of the brain they logged . And this affected the cognitive performance of animals. Periods in which neurons are disabled increased as time dragged on forced wakefulness.

Moreover, according to Thomas R. Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health United States, which financed the study, research "suggests that deprivation of sleep in adolescence may have adverse emotional and cognitive consequences that could affect brain development."
