The Bierzo at the periphery of Galicia

By Xavier Lake Master speaks of the collective freedom of Bierzo.
The inhabitants of Bierzo and feel what we call complementary identities. We are in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon, belong to the province of León, we live in the region of Bierzo, legally declared as County, and many also feel Galician. Fruit of a collective identity which appears complex, Castile, Leon, Galicia and Berciano. Of course, needless to say that the feeling bercianeiro press over the others.
In Portugal there is a great historical identification that is beside the point here treat retail. Will only remark that we are identified as Galician Bercianos when we go to Castile or abroad, by our peculiar accent. So are many Bercianos found that, out of our land, part of that identity hidden, the Galician course, likes or dislikes for some.
Despite the attempts of outside institutions, Junta de Castilla y León and León Department, for silence him, the truth is that identity Galician-Berciano still present. Can not be otherwise. There is a spatial continuity between Galicia and El Bierzo overflowing the political and administrative boundaries. The similarities in the perceived territoriality (terrain, landscape, hydrology, nature ...), culture (music, folklore, tradicióis, food ...), language (dialectoloxía, accent, prejudice ...), sociality (mentality, popular religiosity, poblamento, customary law and too.
The progressive development of the capitalist system in the Cradle accelerated in the second half of the twentieth century, the loss of traditional industry agrogadeira. Consequence was the emigration of Bercianos to continued industrial and urban centers of the state or Europe. The Galician territory, the western half of Bierzo, evolves in two ways. The most mountainous suffers serious despoboación, with the majority vedrana retirees. While in the plain area, the villages endure because of the vineyard and the fruit trees and vegetables. In the villages the processes of urbanization favors its castelanización.
The economic crisis, the cultural uniformity Castilian and political dependence of Bierzo also brought about the resurgence galegueiro. The Bercianos try not to spoil our signs of local identity, cultural and linguistic diversity. Being a peripheral territory of Castile and Leon should not force the creation of a frontier, real or imagined, with Galicia. In the past history was not good, but very true is that the state of the local governments do not help enough to bring down boundaries between territories. Behold the Bercianos suffer the grave consequences of the steady implementation of the territoriality principle by both governments of Santiago and Valladolid.
The Cradle in the XXI century has to struggle to break those limits autonomic or regional Galicia. Because we are both a peripheral territory of Castile and Leon and Galicia. This implies our claim Galician as an essential part of our cultural and territorial identity.
