El patrimonio lingüístico de Castilla y León aparece regulado en el artículo 5 del Estatuto de Autonomía de Castilla y León:
El leonés, como realidad lingüística viva, es citado en el segundo punto de dicho artículo, que establece su protección específica y reconoce su particular valor dentro del patrimonio lingüístico de la comunidad, prescribiendo, además, la regulación de su protección, uso y promoción.
Además, el punto tres del mismo artículo alude al respeto y la protección hacia la lengua gallega en los lugares donde se utiliza. El idioma Galicia also has an explicit recognition in the law of the district of El Bierzo.

In turn, several groups, and even the Parliament of Galicia, have repeatedly asked for protection for the Galician language and its speakers within the autonomous territory of Castilla y León.
But the Junta de Castilla y León, once again, has ignored almost all previous requests.
In this situation, associations and people who signed this manifesto demanding that the Junta de Castilla y León urgently perform the following actions of protection for both local languages in order to ensure its existence and continuity for the territory currently used:
legal 1.-Development of Articles 5.2 and 5.3 of the Statute of Autonomy of Castile and Leon, so that Leon and Galicia have identical normative and practical treatment, consistent with the unique sociolinguistic situations of both languages \u200b\u200bin the Autonomy.
2.-Establishment of a regional administrative body charged with the tasks of protection and promotion of Leon and Galicia, in order to achieve a policy of defense of both languages \u200b\u200bcoordinated, coherent, effective and continuity.
3.-Promotion Galician and Leonese Part of respecting the varieties of language constituting and involving speakers heritage and the inhabitants of the areas where preserved in the language retrieval task, with awareness campaigns, appreciation and awareness of the linguistic heritage, as well as encouraging contact their culture with other areas that also have these languages \u200b\u200bas heritage, though these areas are outside the autonomous administrative boundaries.
4.-learning Introduction Leonese and Galician in formal education in an appropriate manner, as a priority in areas where these languages \u200b\u200bare kept or remained in use at least until recently, and according to social demands in other areas.
5.-Recovery of indigenous place names, first making an inventory of the traditional major and minor place names, and later included in the geographical gazetteers.
6.-In cultural policy: Support the cultural and literary creation of Leon and Galicia, and publications and publishers that use these languages. Collaborate with organizations from within the self, guide its work in promoting the study and the recovery of Galician and Leonese. Promote literary competitions in Leon and Galicia.
